Experiences in art, some questions
I wanted to switch gears a bit here by trying to bring us all together with a few questions, which everyone is invited to respond to. These are very open ended and broad questions which I hope will help bring to light one of the key aspects of being an artist or an arts professional, and that in a nut shell is one’s dedication, that deep drive or desire within yourself, which one can only satiate with art.
I think many people would agree with me when I say that a serious career in the art world as an art professional demands more than just a skill or ability. Instead it demands a dedication, a need, and a desire for art. In many cases for arts sake is why we are here. I think that I might be helpful for the mentors to share a singular experience that was formative for them, an experience that made them realize they’re life long dedication to a path in the arts.
So Mentors, myself included as to what was or were some of the most formative experiences in art?
I also think that a part of this dedication demands a dedication to the local art community of which you are an inherent part. In being so it is important to be aware of what is going on in the community and working to be a part of a specific or many art “worlds”. For example visiting local, national or international exhibitions, performance, readings, lectures, all play an important role in forming your place in the larger art world as a whole.
Therefore, Students, are there any art events, as in exhibitions, lectures, that you have recently attended? This could be anything in Santa Barbara or maybe Los Angeles, or elsewhere in the last month, lets say. Could you share what the event of exhibition was and some reaction to that? For example I know one or more of you have not only seen the Tamayo exhibition at SBMA but also the current exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Forum, or maybe seen a talk or performance at UCSB.
Please feel free to respond openly to one or both of the questions. The goal is to really be aware of the important role you play firstly in your local art community.

One of my most formative experience in the arts would most defenitely have to be joining VADA. It has not only giving me many oppurtunites within the art community but also made me a part of a larger art communitie.
Recently i visited the Huntington Library. It was a great experience. My favorite part of the trip was the "Childrens" garden. The garden was focused on four elements, fire, water, air and earth. Each element was expreseed differntly. I enjoyed the element of water the most. There were differnt fountains and baths of water that were so fun for both children, teens and adults. This was its own form of art and was fun because you didnt just look at the art, you also played with the water. Though it was made for just children play with, i think it was fun for all ages.

I go see art all the time. However recently I was wisped away or rather hijactd from school to go on day long adventure to look at art in santa barbara. And on this little artventure I got we went to a myriad of galleries and one architect. This architect was Mike Shelton, who is responsible for some of the most beautiful and contriversial buildings in santa barbara. His work is completely unique defying convention as well architectual reviewers. However they do not jaunt out from the city as pieces of a different puzzel. Despite the buildings irregularity they seem to be a part of the city. His four story 20' by 20' tower of a building is a beautiful spectacle with surfaces that play with the suns light and emdbody a sense of motion and life. It was really cool. And while I had never thought of architecture as traditional art, it is just another form of expression that enhances the world we live in. A sense of artistry can be applied to anyhting and the world is better when it is. From tamayo's vibrant colors to vanderpools sweet art, it is all cool.
I am extremely excited to hopefully have the pleasure to work with Jennifer Vanderpool and my peers at Teens for Teens in creating an art piece. The idea behind the art piece originated out of the brilliant mind of Roberta. The art piece would be a watermelon chandelier made of mexican candy. Jennifer is a gifted and talented artist that has created interesting works of art.

i've grown up seeing many types of art semi-around the world, encouraged by my mum because she's an artist herself, such as in the Louvre, a couple museums i don't know the name of cause i'm lame... and can't remember... such as in Chicago, LA, San Fransisco (Mexican museum, etc),some place in London a couple times, etc...haha. Oh man there's still so much more to see though. anyways... i'm excited to get this project into action.
